Gilbert Arenas Predicts Spurs Series Loss After Wembanyama Struggle
Gilbert Arenas said the Timberwolves series against the Spurs is over after Game 1. The former NBA All-Star made that call after watching Victor Wembanyama struggle against Minnesota.
The Timberwolves won the opening game 104-102 against San Antonio. Gilbert Arenas watched the game from his perspective and said he saw enough to make his prediction.
"This series is over," Arenas said. "There was nothing the Spurs did that showed anything that can beat the Minnesota Timberwolves in a series."
Wembanyama finished with 11 points in the game. He went 5-for-17 from the field overall. The 7-foot-4 MVP candidate scored just three points on 1-for-5 shooting in the fourth quarter.
Arenas criticized how Wembanyama defended guards during the game. He said Wembanyama did not understand guard offense when facing smaller players.
"They still don't know what their offense looks like," Arenas explained. "Victor Wembanyama still can't—he still doesn't understand guard offense."
The former NBA star said Wembanyama should have been called for fouls at the nine-minute mark. He claimed Wembanyama fouled Rudy Gobert and then got called for blocking the play.
"He puts himself in situations where he's going to be in foul trouble in this series when he goes on the road," Arenas said.
Arenas also said the Spurs might need to adjust their strategy against Minnesota. He suggested the Timberwolves could play five players who make three-pointers in the fourth quarter.
"Wemby might get played off the court in the fourth quarter," Arenas stated. "He has to guard one of those guys, and that man is getting to it—they're just driving to the lane."
The Timberwolves did not have Donte DiVincenzo available for the game. Anthony Edwards played at less than 100 percent as well. Despite those absences, Minnesota still won the opener.
"This series is far from over," Arenas said. "It's apparent the chess game has already started."
