One dead, one critical after pickup and box truck collide head-on

A head-on collision between a pickup truck and a commercial box truck killed one driver and left another in critical condition on Broadway Road in Mesa late Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred shortly before 12 p.m. near Nina Drive, just west of Extension Road. Mesa Police responded to the scene and found both vehicles with heavy front-end damage.

"Mesa Police are investigating a serious multi-vehicle collision near Broadway Rd & Nina Dr. Broadway Rd is closed in both directions between Extension Rd & Westwood. Please avoid the area, use alternate routes, and expect delays."

That message came from the Mesa Police Department on its official social media account on June 30.

Road closure disrupts east-west traffic

Video from an Arizona Family news drone showed the pickup truck on its side next to the box truck. Mesa Fire & Medical crews used a ladder truck to reach a victim trapped in the smaller truck.

Mesa police confirmed one driver died at the scene. The other driver was transported to a hospital in critical condition. There were no passengers in either vehicle, according to AZFamily reporter Ben Bradley.

Broadway Road remained closed in both directions between Extension Road and Westwood as of 1 p.m. Police told drivers to expect delays while the investigation continued into the afternoon.
