A deadly collision on McDowell Road

A pedestrian died early Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle in the Maryvale neighborhood of west Phoenix. Police detained the driver and booked them for driving under the influence.

Phoenix police responded to reports of the crash around 2 a.m. near 57th Avenue and McDowell Road, just north of Interstate 17, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

First responders found the pedestrian dead in the roadway. The victim has not yet been publicly identified.

Driver showed signs of impairment

The driver remained at the scene after the collision. Police said the driver showed signs of impairment.

"The driver showed signs of impairment and will be booked for driving under the influence," a Phoenix PD spokesperson said, according to Arizona's Family.

KTAR News reported that the driver was processed for DUI. Investigators have not released the driver's identity.

Police said the pedestrian was crossing the road mid-block when struck, according to Arizona's Family.

McDowell Road shut for investigation

Authorities closed McDowell Road from 55th Drive to 57th Drive while detectives processed the scene. The road remained shut until approximately 7:15 a.m., according to Hoodline and Arizona's Family.

"Detectives ask anyone with video, photos or information to contact Phoenix Police Crime Stop at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness," according to the Phoenix Police Department, as reported by Hoodline.

A corridor flagged for safety upgrades

The crash occurred on a stretch of road that city officials have identified as a high-injury network. The City of Phoenix Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan flagged segments of McDowell Road as having a disproportionate share of pedestrian-involved fatal crashes, particularly at night, according to Hoodline.

This is the latest serious collision in Maryvale this spring. A June 1 pre-dawn crash in the neighborhood involved a pickup truck that struck and killed a man, according to earlier reporting by Hoodline.
