Prescott Police Officers Involved in Deadly Shooting During Welfare Check

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — A deadly shooting involving officers from the Prescott Police Department is under investigation after a person was killed during a welfare check Wednesday evening.

Around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Prescott officers were dispatched to a residence on Eagle Ridge Road for a welfare check after a person made suicidal statements to a family member, according to officials.

When officers arrived, two officers contacted the person by telephone and asked him to exit the home, officials said. Once the person went outside, he allegedly displayed a gun, which prompted officers to fire their weapons at him.

The person was struck and pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel and medics who responded to the location. Authorities have not released the person's name at this time.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety, which handles independent reviews of officer-involved shootings in the state, is investigating the incident.

The Prescott Police Department has not issued a detailed statement beyond the initial account. Further updates on the investigation and the identity of the person involved are expected as the review progresses.
