SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A Scottsdale man is facing felony charges after police say he shot a door-to-door solicitor in the back during a confrontation inside a private, gated community Sunday afternoon.

Scottsdale Police arrested 80-year-old Patrick Joseph McBride, a U.S. Air Force veteran, in connection with the shooting, which happened just after 4 p.m. near Pima and Dynamite roads in the Cantada housing development.

Officers responded to the area after receiving reports of a shooting. They located a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition.

According to police, the victim was working door-to-door and soliciting for window-washing services when he approached McBride's house. McBride confronted the young man about being in the private community. Police say the victim left McBride's home but remained in the neighborhood.

During a later encounter in the neighborhood, police say McBride was armed with a handgun. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the back.

McBride stayed at the scene and was detained by responding officers. Detectives with the Scottsdale Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation.

McBride was booked on the following charges:

  • Aggravated assault, serious physical injury
  • Disorderly conduct involving a weapon

Police say there are no outstanding suspects and that the incident is believed to be isolated, with no ongoing threat to the community. The investigation is ongoing.

McBride told detectives during an interview that the man who was shot, "shouldn't be in this neighborhood. He made a move at me. I told him to leave," according to court records.

ABC15 left a phone message seeking comment from McBride but did not hear back.

A judge set McBride's bond at $150,000 on Monday. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 21.
