Scottsdale: Motorcycle Rider Seriously Injured After Crashing While Fleeing DPS

A high-speed chase ends in a crash on Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard

A motorcyclist is in stable condition after being seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in Scottsdale early Saturday morning, authorities said. The rider was fleeing from the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) when the motorcycle went down, according to the Scottsdale Police Department.

Timeline of the incident

DPS said troopers initiated a pursuit with the motorcycle around 1:43 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 10, just before the 43rd Avenue exit. Scottsdale police were then dispatched around 2:20 a.m. to the area of Via Linda and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard after the motorcyclist crashed.

The roadway was closed from 2:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. while authorities investigated the crash scene. The rider was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries but was reported to be in stable condition as of 2:20 p.m.

Conflicting accounts on the pursuit

Scottsdale police said that DPS's air unit was following the motorcyclist when the crash occurred. The department also stated that Scottsdale officers were not actively involved in the DPS pursuit.

DPS gave a different characterization, telling 12News that "DPS Troopers were investigating an incident in that area." DPS did not say why the motorcycle was flagged or why troopers began following it.

The Scottsdale Police Department shared the conflicting accounts on social media, noting: "Reportedly, the motorcycle rider was fleeing from DPS through Scottsdale when the crash occurred. DPS's air unit was following the rider from overhead. Scottsdale PD officers were not actively involved in the DPS pursuit. Our units assisted with the single-vehicle collision once that occurred."

What we know

The rider's identity has not been released. No other vehicles or pedestrians were reported to be involved in the crash. The Scottsdale Police Department said the crash was classified as a single-vehicle collision.

DPS did not provide additional details on the original incident that led troopers to begin following the motorcycle. The department did not say whether any citations were issued in connection with the pursuit.
