Three Downtown Chandler Restaurants Tied to a Single Owner Shut Down Permanently

Three popular downtown Chandler restaurants closed their doors for the last time on Saturday, Aug. 29, in a move that has left local diners scrambling for answers.

Tipsy Egg, The Uncommon and Recreo Cantina all shut down at the end of the same business day. The three locations are linked by a common thread: they are all tied to developer Niels Kreipke and are managed on his behalf by Chris Purcell, who operates several concepts in downtown Chandler.

From temporary to permanent in a single day

The closures first surfaced this week when the three restaurants abruptly stopped serving guests without warning or explanation. At the time, Kreipke told the local food and drink blog Mouth by Southwest that all three would reopen by the following weekend.

That plan changed overnight. According to a follow-up report by Mouth by Southwest on Aug. 27, Purcell reached out late Wednesday afternoon to say the closures were now permanent. Guests were given one final window to dine out. Recreo Cantina and Tipsy Egg were open through Saturday, and The Uncommon was open Friday and Saturday. Hours were posted on each restaurant's website.

"We're extremely grateful for our time serving the Downtown Chandler community," Purcell said. He added that the closures are clearing space for new concepts and that additional projects are planned for downtown Chandler in late 2026 and early 2027, with more details to be announced.

Purcell framed the final weekend as an opportunity for staff and customers to come together one last time before the doors shut for good.

A key piece of downtown falls silent

The Uncommon sits on the prominent southeast corner of Arizona Avenue and Boston Street. The 255-seat eatery, bar and retro arcade opened in July 2022 and quickly became a centerpiece of downtown Chandler's restaurant and nightlife scene. It took over the space formerly home to La Bocca, which had closed after a 2017 kitchen fire.

Its neighbor to the south, Tipsy Egg, served as the breakfast-hours companion to The Uncommon. The two venues shared a kitchen and restrooms, a pairing that made the simultaneous closure of both all the more conspicuous.

Recreo Cantina rounded out the trio, adding a Mexican-style menu to the cluster of related concepts under Kreipke's ownership.

Questions remain

Purcell has not said what prompted three restaurants under common ownership to close at the same time, nor has he offered specifics on what will replace them. When asked directly what drove the closures and what is coming next, his response was to direct the public to stay tuned for announcements.

The abruptness of the closures, and the one-day shift from temporary to permanent, has left customers and local business observers still waiting for more detail. The Chandler Chamber of Commerce was reached for comment.

The closures mark a significant change for a stretch of downtown Chandler that has seen a wave of new openings and renovations in recent years. Residents and regulars now await word on what concepts will take over the three vacated spaces.
