Man Chasing Another With Knife Shot by Phoenix Police
A 22-year-old Phoenix man was shot and killed by police after officers say he chased another person with a knife during a domestic dispute late Friday night.
Xavier Alexander Aguirre died from his injuries after being transported to a local hospital, according to the Phoenix Police Department. The shooting occurred near 35th Avenue and Greenway Road around 11 p.m. on June 26.
How It Unfolded
Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at a home in the area, Phoenix Police Sgt. John Buchanan said. When they arrived, officers began speaking with a woman outside the residence.
Aguirre then emerged from the home holding a knife and began chasing another man in the driveway, police said. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but he did not comply and continued the pursuit.
"The initial information provided indicated that family members at the house were fighting, and one was armed with a knife," Sgt. Buchanan stated.
Officers opened fire and struck Aguirre. He was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The knife was recovered at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured.
Investigations Underway
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is leading the outside investigation into the shooting. Phoenix Police will also conduct an internal review.
Greenway Road was closed near 35th Avenue through Saturday morning.
This marks the 24th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County in 2026 and the 47th in the state, according to ABC15.
No additional charges have been filed against any officers. Police have not released details about how many officers were involved in the shooting.
