The Fall
A climber died Saturday after falling while rappelling into one of Sedona's most iconic landmarks. The victim was a 51-year-old man from Chicago, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. His name has not been released by investigators.
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call around 1:30 p.m. on June 13 reporting a climber had fallen inside Keyhole Cave, located above the Sugarloaf Trailhead in Sedona.
Emergency Response
When deputies arrived on scene, they found the man at the cave floor. He had apparently fallen during his rappel descent. Another climber who was present immediately attempted life-saving measures.
"The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office extends our deepest condolences to the climber's family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," said Paul Wick, YCSO Public Affairs Officer.
The Sedona Fire District and Yavapai County Sheriff's Office responded at approximately 1:30 p.m. An Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter arrived on scene around 1:50 p.m., according to the Sedona Red Rock News.
The man later died from his injuries, officials said.
Investigation Underway
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office does not suspect foul play. The death remains under active investigation. Officials have not released the exact cause of death or the specific events that led to the fall.
Authorities have asked visitors to avoid Keyhole Cave while the investigation continues, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
A Spot With Recent History
Keyhole Cave sits above the Sugarloaf Trailhead and is reached by a short but steep approach. The final scramble to the cave entrance requires basic climbing moves, and some visitors bring ropes for the descent, according to Hoodline citing trail descriptions from USA Adventurer.
The area has seen other incidents recently. On June 6, a climber exploring the same Keyhole Cave area became entangled in her rope system and could not descend further. A multi-agency rescue team brought her out safely, according to the Sedona Red Rock News.
Why Rappels Are Dangerous
Rappelling is widely considered one of the riskiest maneuvers in recreational climbing. Experts note that problems with anchors, rope length, or simple miscommunication can trigger a catastrophic fall, according to a recent safety column from REI Co-op.
Academic reviews of mountain-sport mortality published in medical journals list rappelling among the maneuvers most often associated with climbing fatalities. They recommend redundant anchors and backup systems to reduce the risk of a fatal error, according to Hoodline.
Local climbing guides suggest treating the approach to Keyhole Cave as a technical route rather than a casual hike. They recommend going with an experienced partner and using proper rope technique on the steeper sections.
What Visitors Should Know
- Avoid Keyhole Cave while the investigation is ongoing
- The Sugarloaf Trailhead remains open for general hiking
- Treat the cave approach as a technical climb, not a casual walk
- Use a buddy system and proper rope technique if attempting the rappel
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fall.
